Achieving a more diverse Board of Trustees
SCCCC is committed to ensuring that the Board of Trustees is representative of the community it serves. To do this we must ensure that our Trustee board is diverse. By this we not only mean the nine protected characteristics of the Equality Act 2010, but also different backgrounds, life experiences, career paths and diversity of thought.
At SCCCC we recognise we have a diversity deficit and whilst we have an ethical and social responsibility to address this and to tackle injustice, our motivation is much wider. We see diversity as a strength. We want to unblock the talent that exists and use it for the benefit of SCCCC and the communities we serve, bringing considerable added value to the team and to the purpose for which we were established.
A diverse Board in terms of gender, ethnicity, age, social background and ableness contains a broader mix of skills, knowledge and experience and provides an opportunity to widen the influence of the board and change perspectives, giving it greater flexibility to overcome challenge.
We accept that we are failing in terms of diversity. We also acknowledge unconsious bias at both individual and organisational level and recognise the effect this can have in preventing both: the recruitment of new Trustees from diverse backgrounds and; SCCCC from being a truly diverse and inclusive workplace. As Trustees and staff we all have a duty to combat discrimination in all its forms and we are committed to doing so.
