Nine strong team take on city road race to help fund Sheffield older persons’ charity 

A Sheffield woman on the frontline of helping isolated older people across the city has rounded up eight accomplices to help her take on a fundraising running feat. 

Karen Redfern will join colleagues, partners and friends on the starting line at next year’s Sheffield 10K in a bid to raise vital cash for Sheffield Churches Council for Community Care (SCCCC) - the charity where she works. 

The running novice says she was inspired to enter the race having seen first hand the life enhancing support SCCCC provides to older people- many of whom have nowhere else to turn. 

Karen said: “I really believe in the work we do at the charity and I want to support it as much as I possibly can. Due to the work we do here, I realise that as I get older I need to keep myself fit and active. 

“I’ve never done a 10k before but I love a challenge. I roped the others in as I thought it would be good for team building. I’m also hoping it encourages others reading this to sign up for an amazing cause.” 

Karen is the team leader for SCCCC’s Hospital to Home scheme, which operates at all of the city’s adult hospitals. The scheme is a ‘door to door’ service for the most vulnerable older people who have no family support, providing a wide range of practical help and support free of charge on the day of referral. 

Joining Karen on the starting line are colleagues Tammy Wilson, Gavin Furness, Sarah Kelly, Julia Walker, Louise Patterson and Rachel Snee. Karen’s husband, Lee and Sarah’s husband, John have also signed up.  

After Christmas, the team plan on training together at various Park Runs across the city. Anyone taking a SCCCC charity place are also invited to attend socially distanced training sessions.
