SCCCC stands in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement and the whole black community

Professor Peter Skipworth

SCCCC is appalled and outraged by the brutal murder of George Floyd. We strongly condemn his murder and the circumstances that led to it.

At SCCCC we cannot speak on behalf of or claim to fully understand how events like this affect black, Asian and other ethnic minority people, but we can see and recognise the impact that these events have, both individually and collectively. It is painful and distressing and it cannot continue.

The death of George Floyd at the hands of a white police officer in America has demonstrated the inequality, racism and discrimination that still scars the lives of so many people. For the black community it is a painful reminder of the parallels in the systemic racism here in the UK.

We stand in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement and the whole black community in speaking out against racial injustices and inequalities faced by black, Asian and other ethnic minority communities around the world.

At SCCCC we are committed to addressing and challenging racism in all of our work and we will stand together as one to promote fairness and justice, and fight structural, systemic and institutional racism in all its forms.

We will work to better understand the particular inequalities and barriers that older people from black, Asian and other ethnic minority backgrounds face in Sheffield and work hard to remove these as we commit to developing and improving our service for the benefit of the communities we serve.

We will work tirelessly to become a more diverse organisation by making sure that people from black, Asian and other ethnic minority backgrounds are represented at all levels of the organisation, and we will recommit to our underlying values of diversity and inclusion. Our doors are open to everyone and we exclude nobody.

We want to be part of the solution and we encourage you to write to our Chief Executive Officer directly at director@scccc.co.uk with any thoughts and ideas on how SCCCC can reinforce our commitment to the communities in Sheffield.
