Phil and Sam’s Final Reunion

Phil was 65 years old and spending his final days at the Palliative Care Unit at the Northern General Hospital. As his time grew short, there was one thing he longed for more than anything—a final moment with his beloved dog, Sam.

Sam, a 15-year-old Labrador, had been living at Spring Street Kennels since Phil was admitted to hospital. As an old dog Sam was partially sighted and deaf, he had grown up by Phil’s side. They were more than companions—they were family.

When a social worker from the unit reached out to SCCCC with a simple but powerful request—to reunite Phil with Sam one last time—we didn’t hesitate.

We collected Sam and safely transported him to the hospital. Though frail, Sam’s tail wagged with recognition the moment we arrived. He knew. He could feel it.

Up in the palliative care ward, with Phil’s permission, we carefully lifted Sam onto the bed. The moment their eyes met, time seemed to pause. Phil had feared Sam had passed away—but here he was, warm and alive, snuggling into his chest. Phil stroked his old friend, tears in his eyes, whispering memories of puppyhood, training, and the years they’d shared.

After the first few visits, The team at SCCCC thanked Becca for supporting Lyn and asked her how they were getting along. Becca said:

“It’s my absolute pleasure. She is absolutely lovely.  So different to my last lady, so it feels right. I think we will become good pals. I saw her again yesterday which was fab. I think chatting to somebody is really helping her .  I’ve arranged to see her again next Wednesday which is her husband’s third anniversary of his death – was really touched that she asked me if I would visit that day to cheer her up.”

Recently Becca became an aunt and Lyn adores hearing about how the little one is doing as she loves children and one of her favourite things to make are baby outfits.

When Lyn was asked about her experience with SCCCC and Becca, she said;

“I can tell her anything, we laugh and cry together, Becca listens and does not judge me. She sorts things out for me. "We love each other".  I feel SCCCC provided me with the most help out of any service and they are so professional.”
