Yorkshire cities dash for Sheffield man desperate to help older people’s cause

A recovering heart patient will race between Yorkshire’s two biggest cities to raise vital cash for a Sheffield older persons’ charity he’s been inspired to support.

Aaron Theaker, aged 23, will run the mammoth 56km between Sheffield and Leeds for Sheffield Churches Council for Community Care (SCCCC), having seen its work first hand in his role with British Red Cross.

The runner also wants to smash his own fitness goals, having battled serious heart problems in recent months.

Aaron said: “I have worked alongside SCCCC for the last two years which has been a wonderful experience. The charity is an absolute asset to the community, especially during this troubling time.

“What the team does deserves some recognition, the fact that despite everything that's happened in the world, they offer to help to so many agencies including the NHS, and those in the older community is amazing.

“I’m doing this challenge as I’ve had very bad heart problems recently. I wanted to do something for myself to prove to myself I was getting better while at the same time raising money and awareness for a charity that really deserves it.”

SCCCC was set up more than 50 years ago to support the over 65s in Sheffield. It works alongside Sheffield City Council, Sheffield Teaching Hospitals and other care agencies to achieve its mission of improving wellbeing, and reducing isolation and loneliness in the city’s older community.
