Runner makes charity half marathon pledge to help plug pandemic shortfall

A Sheffield runner amongst the first to sign up for next year’s rearranged half marathon, wants others to join him in raising money for an older persons charity facing a pandemic fundraising shortfall.

Christian Hopkins, aged 49, will don the colours of Sheffield Churches Council for Community Care (SCCCC) at next year’s race after time as a volunteer meant he saw first-hand the care they give to isolated older people in the city.

The eager participant hopes his early sign-up will prompt others to run for the charity, which has been forced to cancel its usual fundraising events because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Christian, who works as a BT analyst, said: “BT actively encourage its staff to volunteer by giving us three paid volunteer days per year, which is how I heard about SCCCC. I’ve assisted the Hospital to Home team, moving furniture and other tasks, although I would love to do more.

“My colleague, Sam Nix, signed up for the Sheffield Half Marathon a few years ago, but was unable to take part due to injury, so I ran for her.

“I’m an avid runner and it helps my mental health, so I decided to sign up for this year’s half marathon to raise as much as I can for the charity. Unfortunately due to Covid-19, the event has been postponed, but I’ll be eagerly at the starting line for next year’s race.

“The charity has lost so much cash from fundraising events, but they are still working hard to help older people in the community. I would encourage anyone who fancies a running challenge to sign up for SCCCC – this charity and their staff and volunteers are amazing.”

At the end of last month, Run For All postponed the Sheffield Half Marathon and Sheffield 10K which was to be held on Sunday 27 September 2020.

The new date for both events is now Sunday 28 March 2021. To get a SCCCC charity place, email Ericka Hill at Ericka.hill@scccc.co.uk.
